{"id":26698,"date":"2026-09-01T19:37:20","date_gmt":"2026-09-01T17:37:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cagliaricalcio.com\/?post_type=news&#038;p=26698"},"modified":"2026-09-01T19:40:08","modified_gmt":"2026-09-01T17:40:08","slug":"sugawara-signs-for-cagliari","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/cagliaricalcio.com\/en\/news\/sugawara-signs-for-cagliari\/","title":{"rendered":"Sugawara signs for Cagliari"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cagliari Calcio is delighted to announce the signing of Yukinari Sugawara, who joins the Rossobl\u00f9 from Southampton on loan with an option to buy.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Born in Toyokawa, Japan, on June 28, 2000, Sugawara is a versatile and modern defender, capable of playing multiple roles on the right flank. A full-back by training, he can also be deployed as a wide midfielder and, when necessary, as a central defender. His technical qualities, dynamism, and ability to read the game allow him to make an impact in both phases of play, with a particular propensity for attacking thrusts and finishing.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Raised in the youth sector of Nagoya Grampus, he made his debut in professional football at a very young age before moving to Europe in the summer of 2019, when he was signed by AZ Alkmaar. In five seasons with the Dutch club he made 198 appearances, 14 goals and 29 assists in all competitions, establishing himself as one of the most interesting young wingers in the Eredivisie and also gaining significant experience in European competitions. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In July 2024, he joined Southampton in England. He played 35 games in his first Premier League season. In August 2025, he moved on loan to Werder Bremen, where he played 31 times in the 2025\/26 Bundesliga season, contributing six assists.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sugawara combines speed and quality in dribbling with a strong ability to cross and assist his teammates. Good at recovering the ball and anticipating it, he knows how to read defensive situations and continuously participate in the offensive construction. His international career has also allowed him to develop considerable tactical maturity, putting his flexibility at the service of the team. His career with the Japanese national team was also important: after representing the youth selections, participating among other competitions in the 2017 Under-17 World Cup and the 2019 Under-20 World Cup, he made his debut with the senior national team in October 2020. In November 2023 he scored his first goal for Japan away against Indonesia; in 2024 he took part in the Asian Cup. This summer he participated in the 2026 World Championship, used in every race.
