PRESS ROOM | Nicola before Milan-Cagliari

First Team - 10 January 2025

.On the eve of the match against Milan, Davide Nicola, coach of Cagliari, spoke in a press conference covering various topics: from the first-half season review to the transfer market, and his expectations for the upcoming clash with the Rossoneri. Here are his words.

HALF-TIME REVIEW
“In the first half of the season, we’ve earned a certain number of points that aligns with our goal, but we always want more. Perhaps in some situations, we deserved a bit more, but we’re looking ahead. Cagliari has shown identity and the desire to compete with everyone, but we can still improve. Together with the club, we’ve evaluated what’s needed in the market, also considering the needs of those currently in the squad who might be looking for more continuity elsewhere. We’re happy with the commitment from everyone and are convinced that 95% of the group should remain as it is. There are areas where we’re a bit more exposed, like finding a replacement for Zappa in the role of a right-back, which Zortea can also do, though he’s currently performing well higher up the field – or finding an alternative to Luvumbo to provide certain characteristics to our setup. This is also why we’ve used Felici with specific tasks. In midfield, we have five players, all of whom are performing well, and right now, there are two spots available. Adopo, Makoumbou, Marin, and Deiola have had significant playing time. Prati has had less, partly due to his injury and recovery time after Lecce, but Matteo knows how much I value him and how much I like him as a player. I told him that personally before saying it publicly, so we’ll evaluate things day by day, considering everyone’s situation.”

TECHNICAL PROJECT
“The initial idea was clear: to maintain a strong group while integrating young players to be developed. This is happening, and we must continue in this direction. Players like Felici, Adopo, Piccoli, Prati, Zortea, and Obert are an integral and key part of our journey. Their development is crucial for the future of Cagliari.”

SATURDAY AGAINST MILAN
“They are teams used to playing every three days. I don’t think they will be tired; on the contrary, winning helps keep enthusiasm high. Milan has a rich and talented squad, and they’re fighting for goals that are different from ours. We’ll need to be smart and focused, staying fully engaged in the match. Great intensity will be required in both phases of the game. In the second half of the season, our intensity and belief must guide us always, regardless of the opponent. More than ever, this is our goal.”
