Zappa renews until 2030

First Team - 20/01/2025

Cagliari Calcio is pleased to announce the contract renewal of Gabriele Zappa, who has signed a new agreement until June 30, 2030.

Born in Monza in 1999 and raised in Inter’s youth system, Zappa played his first professional season with Pescara (2019-20) before joining Cagliari the following season. He made his debut for Cagliari on September 20, 2020, in the away draw against Sassuolo. In the 2020-21 season, he played 34 matches and provided 4 assists. After two consecutive seasons in Serie A, he faced a new challenge: contributing to bringing the team back to the top tier immediately. He succeeded as a key player: one of the central figures in defense, he scored three goals – including his first goal for Cagliari, which came in a 4-1 home win against Ascoli. On June 11, 2023, in Bari during the playoff final, Zappa was the architect of one of the most iconic assists in the club’s history. His perfectly delivered cross to Pavoletti secured promotion to Serie A.

Last season, Zappa confirmed his growth, carving out an important role in securing Cagliari’s survival, playing in all 38 league matches, and also scoring 1 goal, his first in Serie A, in the 2-1 win against Genoa, along with 3 assists. One of the team captains – with 165 appearances for Cagliari – he was among the players who logged the most minutes in the first part of this season: he started in all 21 matches, playing both as a center-back and as a full-back in a four-man defense, with license to push forward to support the offensive phase. Tactical intelligence and versatility were on display, notably with his memorable brace against Milan at Unipol Domus on November 9, his first-ever career double. The goal for the final 3-3 – a volley with his right foot that nestled under the crossbar – is already on the list of the best goals of Serie A 2024-25.

Strong attachment to the island, which has become his second home, and a special bond with the fans: Zappa is a true example of dedication, perseverance, and the constant desire to improve.

Congratulations Gabri, let’s move forward together!
