This is the analysis after Cagliari-Genoa by Cagliari Calcio president Tommaso Giulini, who discussed topics related to the match against the Ligurians, the new stadium, and the entry of investors into the club.
THE MATCH
“There’s a bitter taste in our mouths for the way we conceded, all three of us a bit naively. It’s disappointing, but we knew it would be a tough match against a combative Genoa side. We fought until the end, which is a shame because we might have even won without the injury to our Sant’Elia (Caprile, ed.). But we’re moving forward with confidence in our work and aware of how complicated this Serie A is, where there are no weak teams or teams that are easily predicted for relegation. Every game is incredibly tight, and surprises can arise in any match.”
THE NEW STADIUM
“We’re currently finalizing the financial plan that we’ll need to present by the end of the year. At that point, it will be up to the city council to approve the project. I’m confident it won’t be a problem because I have excellent collaborators, so we can quickly get to the public tender stage and start construction.”
IN THE LOCKER ROOM
“I didn’t speak to the coach or the players, I just went into the locker room for a moment. There was certainly a lot of disappointment, but I’m also pleased because there’s a great desire to secure survival in a league that’s been as even and difficult as it has been in recent years. We’re continuing to work and aiming to get some points, even on tough pitches and perhaps against the odds. It was a thrilling match, decided by some of our lapses in concentration and some poor play. It’s disappointing, but we’re looking to the future.”
THE NEW PARTNERS
“We had a long chat with Maurizio Fiori and the investors he represents. I’m happy to have him with us because he’s first and foremost a fan. Over the years, we’ve been approached by many purely speculative funds. Instead, we’ll be working with a passionate Sardinian who has family here and who perhaps dreamed of returning here as a co-owner of Cagliari. I thank him and everyone who works with me, starting with Antonio Romei, who has barely slept in the last few days to close the deals. So let’s move forward, and I’d like to say: welcome, Maurizio!
It was a very long negotiation, and I believe this is a sign of the seriousness of the other party, along with the confidentiality maintained until Friday’s signing. I was pleased that confidentiality was maintained. Now a new era begins, I will no longer be alone and will share the responsibility after eleven years. I don’t mind this in a football world that has changed so much over the years—there’s less passion and more finance. This is why I chose a fund represented by a true fan, a Sardinian passionate about Cagliari and his homeland. Maurizio Fiori dreamed of returning here and doing so within Cagliari, and that matters more than anything else. The stadium is certainly one of the factors that led to the choice of Praxis and the various investors. We’re talking about a €200 million project, so I’m convinced they will help us move this project forward. Maurizio Fiori will then speak to his investors in due course, as is only right. When we went to America for the TST (in June 2025, ed.) Maurizio Fiori was there and with him some of the investors, the choice of this technical project and of Pisacane as coach also comes from there”.
THE MOMENT
“We always hope to do well and improve. I think we’re in line with our size, because we’ve had a few setbacks, starting with the tough Belotti blow, then Mina, Deiola, Gaetano, and others, intermittently. Our table isn’t alarming, but it’s a league where you have to fight and where it’s difficult for anyone to get points. However, Cagliari is a team that fights and fights, that offers, that plays with courage, so I’m confident, even if we all know how difficult it will be.”
SUPER BORRELLI
“When we met Angelozzi, he immediately mentioned Borrelli, and we’re happy with how Gennaro has settled in: a young, determined, ambitious guy who will be able to help us even after Pavoletti, when our captain retires as a footballer.”
