A candidate for the 2025 Puskás Award, assigned by FIFA to the most beautiful goal of the year, the Rossoblù midfielder shared his emotions with the channels of the international federation Here’s an excerpt from his words:
THE GOAL AGAINST VENEZIA
“L’azione è partita tutta da un rilancio di Augello, io e Gaetano avevamo alzato le mani perché pensavamo che il pallone fosse uscito. Poi da lì è partito un gioco di interscambi, passaggi di prima, colpi di tacco, tunnel, e da lì si è acceso lo stadio. Quando ho ripassato la palla a Gaetano sono andato ad occupare lo spazio pensando come potesse arrivarmi la palla. Dopo che l’ho controllata avevo già in mente di calciare. Non pensavo potesse uscire un gol del genere, dal campo non lo realizzi, ma, quando ho impattato la palla, ho sentito l’istinto di esultare e mi sono detto ‘se prendo la porta è gol’. Sono quei tiri perfetti che entrano. Il merito è un 50% a testa tra me e la squadra. La parte del gioco è del collettivo, mentre la finalizzazione è del singolo: sono in un contesto di fiducia nei compagni, nella loro serietà, che mi mette nelle condizioni di star sereno in campo e arrivare a concludere nel miglior modo possibile. Quando è uscita la candidatura abbiamo riguardato il gol e abbiamo pensato: ‘Addirittura candidati al Puskás? Vuol dire che ci hanno visto proprio qualcosa di bello”.
A SPECIAL DEDICATION
“Quando ho saputo della candidatura ero con mia moglie e le mie figlie: mi sono un attimo assentato e ho sentito internamente una sensazione che non so nemmeno spiegare. Un brivido per tutto il corpo, che continuo a sentire mentre faccio quest’intervista. Ho fatto vedere il gol alle mie due figlie, mi hanno chiesto ‘papà lo hai fatto tu’? ‘Sì amore’, ho risposto, ‘adesso papà è in lista per vincere un premio (il Premio Puskás FIFA 2025, ndr.)’. Mi hanno chiesto di portarglielo se lo vincerò, speriamo. Sono contento perché premi come questo sono obiettivi che un giocatore si pone sempre: la candidatura porta felicità e sono contento per la visibilità che dà a me, alla società, oltre che alla nostra terra, la Sardegna”.
BELIEVING IN YOUR WORK
“What would I say now to little Alessandro Deiola, who started playing for Cagliari as a kid and would one day be nominated for the FIFA Puskás Award? I’d tell him to do everything he’s done all over again. I don’t have any regrets about anything. Not even the mistakes I’ve made along the way or the loan spells in my younger days that frustrated me back then. Leaving Cagliari to play on loan at other clubs really helped shape me and taught me a lot. I firmly believe it helped me come on leaps and bounds both as a footballer and a person. I’d pass on all the help and guidance I’ve received over the years to my younger self and tell him to embrace every hardship that helped him become the player he is today.
I grew up in Sardinia, at Cagliari, and I hung my very first team card from the club in my locker. I signed my first contract with them back in 2006. I wanted to become an icon for the club and wear the shirt with pride. Slowly but surely, I’m achieving my dream, and now I’ve been nominated for the Puskás Award. Obviously, it goes without saying that every player dreams of one day representing their country. Anything’s possible if you truly believe it can happen”.

Included by FIFA among a shortlist of eleven nominees for the Award, Deiola’s goal is the only one representing Italy. The award is named after legendary Hungarian striker Ferenc Puskás and celebrates the most spectacular goals scored between 11 August 2024 and 2 August 2025. Among past winners are Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar and Zlatan Ibrahimović.
