Stefano Melis, CEO of Cagliari Calcio, gave an interview to “Corriere dello Sport,” out today, written by Ivan Paone. Below is an extract of his words.
THE TEAM’S CURRENT TIMES
“We have two important matches ahead of us. Sassuolo and Cremonese are certainly key milestones in our season. We’re confident; our progress is in line with expectations. We’re on average with thirty points from thirty games. We have the youngest and most Italian team in Serie A. We arrived with a rookie but highly skilled coach. We’ve consistently shaped our project and are moving forward with it.”
THE NEW STADIUM
“Let’s say I’ll be certain of this when the City Council announces the tender, hopefully by June. But we’ve certainly taken a very important step. This is a fundamental project for the Sant’Elia neighborhood, for the city, and for Sardinia. To those who maliciously emphasize the sixty million euro public contribution, I remind you that the cost of the project is approximately €220 million, a figure that could rise if the situation in the Middle East remains as chaotic as it is now. The new stadium will allow the redevelopment of the entire area and will have significant benefits.”
ECONOMIC IMPACT AND UEFA EURO 2032
“It will generate tax revenue of €375 million. The demolition of the old Sant’Elia stadium and the construction of the new stadium will employ four thousand people. Once completed, the stadium, including its management and related activities, will create five thousand jobs. If the tender is announced by June, we expect the work to be completed by spring 2031. If so, Cagliari could be one of the cities designated to host the 2032 European Championships.”
AN IMPORTANT STEP FOR THE ITALIAN FOOTBALL SYSTEM
“We’ve never been so close to completing the new stadium. At a time when football is experiencing a structural crisis, creating a modern, inclusive, and cutting-edge facility would be a fantastic sign.”
UNIPOL DOMUS WILL REMAIN
“This is proof of how the club has always been ready to collaborate and respond to the demands and needs of the public. A facility ready for the community, where the municipality will be able to host events and shows in the future, while we will be able to consider bringing the Primavera team and, who knows, the Under-23 team and a women’s first team.”
WELCOME BACK “GALLO”
“After his injury, Andrea Belotti was always close to the team. He became a leader in the locker room despite playing only two and a half games, scoring two goals. A truly fantastic guy, to say the least. Like captain Pavoletti and all the others.”
