On the occasion of the presentation of the 2nd Gigi Riva Trophy, hosted in the “Giorgio Pisano” room of L’Unione Sarda, the rossoblù captain Alessandro Deiola met the journalists. These are his words:
IN MEMORY OF THE LEGEND
“Saturday won’t be just a friendly, it will be an important match, with great symbolic value: we will take to the field to remember Gigi, we will try to honor him in the best possible way. At the same time, it will be a test of preparation for the championship: we will have to have the same approach as an official match. It will be wonderful to be able to embrace our fans again in our stadium, we can’t wait to take the field. We want to do well. Riva’s values are indisputable: everyone who comes to Cagliari knows how important he was to this land and this club. And how much he still is today. It’s something we try to convey: Gigi is always close to us.”
HONOR AND RESPONSIBILITY
“For me, Saturday evening will be a special, very beautiful feeling: I will wear the armband, I am proud to have become the captain of Cagliari. This year it will be the first time at the Unipol Domus and it will coincide with the Trophy dedicated to Riva: it will be an emotion that I will carry with me forever. There is a good group, great harmony, we are building our identity: the new ones who have arrived are all guys who have great talent and a great sense of work. They were immediately included in the group, they are becoming applying a lot and they will be able to give us a great helping hand this year will be to repeat ourselves after what we did last season, to continue on that path”.
THE TEAM AT THE CENTER OF EVERYTHING
“The coach is using me as a central defender, a position I’ve played in the past: under Coach Ranieri and even last season in some matches. I’m putting myself at the disposal of the coach and my teammates to try to help Cagliari reach their goals. A personal goal? To help all my teammates reach their best level: being close to them, supporting them, always keeping the group together. It’s essential to achieving results.”
