Cagliari win the Trofeo de Vallecas in Madrid, beating hosts Rayo Vallecano 6-5 on penalties (1-1 after 90 minutes). The Spanish test during the long international break therefore ends with a smile, following a tough game that was opened by Álvaro García in the 23rd minute with a first-time volley that beat Radunović.
The first half was dominated by the Madrid side, with the Rossoblù goalkeeper starring with a series of saves to deny Unai López, Álvaro García and Camello. In the second half, with Caprile replacing Radunović and the flurry of substitutions increasing as is customary on these occasions, Cagliari stepped up the pace, although Rayo continued to threaten through Isi.
In the 79th minute, Isi hit the post, just two minutes after Nzola had pounced on a loose ball inside the box to level the score at 1-1. In the penalty shootout, Caprile saved Isi’s effort, while Molina denied Gagliardini. Pelayo then saw his penalty saved by Caprile, giving Zé Pedro the chance to score the winning spot-kick.
