The Scudetto commemorative jersey in Milan

Rossoblù World - 15/04/2024

The presentation of the jersey celebrating the ’69-’70 Scudetto, unveiled on 12 April, 54 years after that historic triumph, was held this afternoon in Milan. Cagliari Calcio was the guest of its technical sponsor Eye Sport and The Pitch Football Store, a shop in the heart of the city, in San Babila.

The iconic white jersey with its details: V-neck collar with navy blue laces; armholes with red-blue piping; the 4 Mori logo embroidered in the felt on the heart side. On the bottom right-hand edge the embroidered label with gold lurex thread with the inscription ‘Campioni d’Italia 1969-1970’.

The exclusive in-store event also featured a talk, moderated by journalist Giuseppe Pastore, with the participation of captain Leonardo Pavoletti and Nicola Riva, Gigi’s son. An interweaving of emotions, memories and anecdotes in red and blue colours, between past and present. For the Club were President Tommaso Giulini, Vice-President Fedele Usai and Business and Media Director Stefano Melis.

“The shirt celebrates the Legend: 54 years ago some champions were able to achieve an extraordinary feat, winning a unique Scudetto and making Sardinia known nationally. At the same time it pays homage to the man who unfortunately left us a few months ago, the great and immense Gigi Riva, who within that team was and remains the absolute hero not only for Cagliari fans, but also for all football fans: to this day he remains the best goalscorer in the history of the Italian national team,’ said Stefano Melis. “For Sardinia, however, Gigi Riva was much more than an extraordinary footballer: he represented an example in terms of values, sense of belonging, an authentic reference for the people. A ‘hombre vertical’, proud, discreet, who always put himself in the right way. Today’s event was a wonderful opportunity to tell once again what Cagliari is for Sardinians and beyond, to show how much it goes beyond the purely sporting and footballing aspect, representing an entire land and its people’.

Added Leonardo Pavoletti“I’m impressed to see this jersey, congratulations must go to our technical sponsor EYE Sport who has reproduced something iconic, with attention to detail: it really looks like the jersey worn by those champions who made history. We hope to wear it at the end of the season to celebrate an important milestone for us and all our people. The example of those champions, of Gigi Riva and all his teammates, is very strong and endures over the years: Cagliari, the fans, the passion for the red and blue colours, all ingredients for living our environment and working at our best. Being here next to Nicola is a great honour, no one better than him can carry on his father’s example”.

“Dad did not like to talk much and preferred silence, he tried to give his example, his point of view with discretion, he always carried on this philosophy, without compromise,” said Nicola Riva. “There was crazy chemistry in that championship team, celebrating that triumph is always wonderful and I think it can still convey so much to people, especially the younger ones. It feels good to have such a fine knit in your hands, the result of meticulous research and production work. I am happy that today’s Cagliari is honouring its blazon and the importance it holds among its fans, and I believe that one can only build one’s future by celebrating and embellishing one’s glorious history”.
