Rossoblù midfielder Alessandro Deiola spoke exclusively to the microphones of Radio TV Serie A. Here is an excerpt of his words:
HEART AND HEAD
“Having achieved a draw against Napoli can mean a lot: we were coming from a difficult moment, after Udine we gave another positive response, in front of us we had the Italian champions. This must give us further charge and awareness in view of the direct matches that await us. Cagliari never gives up, they always believe in us to the end: we are the team that in the championship has scored more points with goals scored from 90 minutes onwards: it cannot be a coincidence”.
CAGLIARI COMES FIRST
“My favourite role is as an inside right midfielder, I like to go inside, scoring goals is a unique feeling. However, I am at the team’s disposal, I play where the coach asks me, where my experience and skills are most needed: last season, for example, the coach asked me to also play as a central defender. The most important thing is to achieve our goals together, to be important for our teammates on and off the field. What really matters is the good of Cagliari’.
A SPECIAL JERSEY
“As a Sardinian, playing in Cagliari is an even greater responsibility, I know I cannot afford to drop and when I take the field I always try to give my best, even more. Wearing this jersey is special, it excites me even just talking about it. We really represent an Island, a whole people, it’s not just phrases, it’s reality. And that’s what I always try to pass on to my teammates, especially the newcomers. Our people are very attached to the team, it’s not something you experience everywhere: when Cagliari loses you feel the sorrow; winning really means giving a lot of people a little more serene days. This jersey for me is like a second skin, I feel it sewn onto me. Cagliari is the team where I dreamt of playing since I was a child; I managed to fulfil this dream and I would like to end my career here. I wouldn’t see myself in any other jersey”.
THE COACH’S GUIDE
“From the first day he arrived with us, coach Ranieri gave us tranquillity, serenity: he compacted the group, making it united, even stronger. We have become a single block: technical staff and team. We are a family, where everyone is willing to give everything for the other, like brothers. And the coach is like a father to us: we follow him, we will follow him to the end, because we know that he will guide us to achieve our goals, as he did last season. Of this I am convinced”.
READY FOR BATTLE
“After Lazio we told ourselves that we had to put the negative moment behind us, another championship would have to begin. In Udine we would have deserved even more in the end; against Napoli the attitude was right from the start. We have seen the change of gear that this group has made, now we must be good to continue on this path: the next months will be made of direct clashes, battles, we play for everything. What we have done now must simply be a stimulus”.
PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE
“Riva? A legend, I won’t go any further, I’d risk getting emotional again. Makoumbou, Gaetano, Prati, I would also add Oristanio, are youngsters who have the chance to become important footballers in our league and perhaps not only. They are great youngsters, footballers I see apply themselves every day. Over the years I have been able to play with and against many very strong players. Among the opponents I could mention Kvaratskhelia and Dybala. As for former teammates, I would say Daniele Conti, Andrea Cossu, Radja Nainggolan, Nicolò Barella and two strikers, Mauricio Pinilla and Robert Acquafresca.
