An important meeting dedicated to the project for Cagliari’s new stadium was held at Palazzo Regio, the seat of the Metropolitan City of Cagliari. Delegations from UEFA, the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), the Municipality of Cagliari, and Cagliari Calcio were present.
Michele Uva, Executive Director for Social and Environmental Sustainability and official delegate to the Italian Organizing Committee for UEFA Euro 2032, participated on behalf of UEFA. The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) was represented by Antonio Talarico and Giovanni Spitaleri. The City of Cagliari was represented by Mayor Massimo Zedda, Councilor for Sport Giuseppe Macciotta, and the sole responsible for the proceedings Daniele Olla. Cagliari Calcio was represented by President Tommaso Giulini, General Manager Stefano Melis, and engineer Alessandro Gosti, the club’s technical advisor.
FORMAL COMMITMENT
The meeting took place in an atmosphere of constructive collaboration, thus providing continuity and further substance to the work carried out over the years leading up to the recent presentation (on July 28th) by the Club of the final project, updated with the bill of quantities and the related financial framework. This ongoing process is confirmed after the July 30th meeting by the communication signed by the mayor and the club president, which renews “the formal commitment of the Municipality of Cagliari and Cagliari Calcio to share the process and the related timeline for the construction of the new stadium to host the 2032 European Football Championships.”
Stefano Melis, general manager of Cagliari Calcio: “The meeting was absolutely in line with expectations: long-scheduled, it aimed to review the project’s progress. Cagliari has decided to accept the recommendation to increase the stadium’s capacity from 25,000 to 30,000 to accommodate major sporting events, including European competitions and national team matches, which have been missing from Sardinia for decades. Our goal, alongside providing Cagliari and Sardinia with a modern and functional stadium, is to be among the cities selected by the FIGC for Euro 2032. We were assured that our project is credible and among the most advanced. The final step will be the updated economic-financial plan, which we will present to the City Council for the launch of the public tender.”
Giuseppe Macciotta, Cagliari City Councilor for Sport: “A fruitful discussion, which highlighted how bureaucratic and environmental obstacles were overcome in less than a year, allowing the final project to be submitted. The economic and financial plan will follow shortly, leading to the public tender. The project is also sound from an energy and sustainability perspective, as recognized by UEFA and the Italian Football Federation (FIGC). The Administration is committed and confident that the project is competitive and attractive. We will continue to work together on the final developments and complete the process that will effectively launch the stadium’s construction.”
