After the 2-2 draw at Unipol Domus, the Rossoblu coach met with the media to analyze the match. Here are his comments.
ON THE MATCH
We beat Roma at home; on paper, that was the toughest match. We drew against Pisa: it’s a shame because today, just like against Genoa, we threw away two points, both with just minutes to go. We all need to understand our role in this championship. A team fighting for our objective can’t afford to throw away points; these are very important matches. We had the game under control, the game was coming to an end, and there were a few extra touches in midfield: that’s the price you pay when you have a young team; sometimes you make mistakes. We need to become more cunning, football-wise, because it’s these details that make the difference.”
GREAT REGRET
“Based on the match, I’d say it was better today than against Genoa: the team made some progress in terms of their play, and I saw spirit and reaction when we went behind. The first half was a bit subdued, even though we had some chances, especially with Kilicsoy. We struggled with their set pieces, their depth a bit, and the midfield didn’t provide much coverage. In the second half, we improved and deserved the three points. But we lacked the healthy cunning we need to show. The match was over, and in those moments, there’s no need to be nice. There’s a lot of regret, and I hope what happened can be useful for the future; it should serve as a lesson. We’ve been through a series of fierce matches, and it’s a shame we didn’t capitalize when we had the chance.”
WORK TO GROW
We suffered two transitional chances; in the first, Adam made a clearance, which allowed them to counterattack. We conceded too many free kicks. The game changed in the second half, except for Yerry’s chance to get a yellow card; their chances were concentrated in the final stages. We were in control, but we were naive. Today, we started with Palestra deep, but the idea was to play an attacking game: in certain situations, we succeeded. The midfield, however, wasn’t a good filter; we couldn’t stay compact and compact. The substitutions? In the second half, I made the Idrissi-Obert substitution; I wanted more energy. I brought on Zappa, moving Palestra up. Cavuoti replaced Gaetano, and then I brought on Borrelli to field a regular striker and try to cause further damage. We were also naive on many counterattacks, perhaps finding ourselves with a clear numerical superiority. We could have scored a few more goals if we had made different decisions. That’s the price you pay when you have a young team. It’s my job, however, to correct certain aspects: one doesn’t live for personal glory, but to put one’s teammate in a position to do well.”
BRAVO, SEMIH!
“Kilicsoy gave us a lot today. He put in a good performance, scoring in the second half, but he also came very close in the first half. His teammates have faith in him, and you could see that from the way they looked for him throughout the match. We brought in another player, which allows us to make up for some absences. We knew his qualities well, it was just a matter of time. We waited for him, and today the conditions were right to start him. He was ready, and he needs to continue like this. He deserves this joy, and I’m happy for him: he’s been working quietly, it’s not easy to adapt to the Italian league. Time has been a gentleman.”
ON INDIVIDUALS
“Rodriguez is a strong player, he had a great game today too. I needed a player with his characteristics to play alongside Mina, it was a technical choice. I’m happy because he’s improving more and more with each match. Gaetano is growing, and not having a training camp paid the price. He could be the man for the second half of the season: he’s talented, he could be an important asset to our team.”
