Simone Aresti at “Videolina Sport”

Youth Sector - 23 December 2024

As a guest in the Videolina studios, on the “Videolina Sport” show, Simone Aresti reflected on his past – both with the Rossoblu and beyond – as well as his present, with his new role as goalkeeper coach for Cagliari’s Under-18 team, just a few months after ending his professional football career.

A NEW BEGINNING
“I’m living a new adventure,” he says, “which is very stimulating and rewarding. It all happened very quickly, from the end of my playing career to the start of my role as a goalkeeper coach. It was a bit unusual to begin coaching, but I felt comfortable right away, and the players follow me. If you’re credible, they listen to you and grow faster. I try to bring my high-level experience, my time as a young player in the Cagliari youth system, and my journey around Italy in different categories. It wasn’t easy right after retiring; initially, I would have liked to continue playing, but I didn’t have any big opportunities that were worth accepting. Cagliari gave me this new challenge, and I took it on.”

THE JOURNEY
“On May 23, 2024, against Fiorentina on the last day of the 2023/2024 Serie A season, I didn’t expect it to be my final match, but returning to play in Serie A, 17 years after my first time, was emotional. Looking back, I think I’ve earned everything I’ve achieved in my career. I fought my way through every category, won them, and earned my place in Serie A with Cagliari. I didn’t play because others were better than me, but I was proud to be at Cagliari.”

UNBREAKABLE BOND

“With Marco (Mancosu, coach of the Under-18s, ed.) we made our Serie A debut together in the Ascoli-Cagliari match in 2007 when we were very young, and we ended our careers together on May 23, 2024. We both ended up in the Cagliari youth coaching staff, and we’ve been closely connected for many years. My career? If I followed a certain path, it means that was my level, and that’s what I deserved. I’ve always worked day by day, playing my cards against anyone. If someone else played instead of me, it was because they were stronger. Wearing the Cagliari shirt has always been something special for me. From the first day in the youth system until the end of my career, I felt a strong emotion at every moment.”

VENEZIA-CAGLIARI

“We were playing at the same time as the Under-18s (a 2-3 home defeat against Roma, ed.), so I only saw the last ten minutes, with Cagliari pushing hard. Unfortunately, the result is harsh on Cagliari. Stankovic made some great saves, starting with that header stop, which he managed thanks to his excellent positioning. As for the goals conceded, Alen (Sherri, ed.) could do little about them; the second goal was a bit lucky, not much to say about that. Zappa? He’s been a key player this season, he’s taken the next step, and he can aim for even more progress. He deserves everything he’s achieving through his hard work and dedication. In times like these, it’s important to stay calm and keep working, aware of what we’re doing. Everything is up for discussion, nothing is decided yet, and the standings speak for themselves. We need to stay united as always and look ahead with confidence and awareness of our abilities and the work we’ve put in.”
