Cagliari Calcio a 5 Women’s Soccer is born

Rossoblù World - 07/08/2024

Cagliari Calcio is pleased to announce the birth of a new sports project: the Cagliari Calcio a 5 Women’s team. The initiative is the result of an agreement with Mediterranea Cagliari, a historical sports club of the Sardinian capital that has been a reference and an excellence in this sport for almost thirty years and that last season, with the women’s team, achieved its first historic promotion to the top division.

The red and blue colours therefore come together with the aim of supporting and strengthening the women’s five-a-side football movement, combining the sporting experience and values of Cagliari Calcio and Mediterranea to compete with ambition at the highest levels.

With the creation of the Cagliari Women’s 5-a-side Football Club, the club is thus expanding its sports offer: from the Academy to professionalism, passing through the men’s and women’s national youth teams and, from today, also for futsal athletes, who will have the opportunity to fully cultivate their talent in a sport that boasts an ever-growing interest and following of fans and enthusiasts. Other professional football clubs involved in the futsal championships include, to name but a few, Bologna, Roma and Lazio. The latter will certainly be Cagliari’s next opponent in the single round of the Serie A Women’s 5-a-side Football Championship.

A central role in the birth of the initiative and its future development should be attributed to the partner Grendi Group, a leading company in the maritime freight sector. For years close to the red and blue club, and already a partner of the women’s eleven-a-side team, Grendi has decided to flank, in the role of main partner, the red and blue girls in their first ever participation in the highest national championship. The company’s logo will consequently appear in a central position on the official kits of the Cagliari Women’s 5-a-side team, branded Eye Sport.

The Sardinian technical partner, which is about to embark on its third year of collaboration with the red-blue club, has in fact decided to embrace the club’s path and objectives by not limiting itself to the supply of sportswear for the new women’s five-a-side football team, but by taking an active role in the development of the project.

The words of Tommaso Giulini, President of Cagliari Calcio. ‘We are extremely proud to announce the birth of Cagliari Calcio a 5 Women’s Football, a project that represents a new challenge for our club and for the Sardinian sports movement. This collaboration with Mediterranea Cagliari is a further step in the common path of enhancing the talent of young athletes, regardless of gender, and the desire to compete at the highest level. We want to provide players with the best opportunities to develop their skills, respecting the values of integrity, ambition and perseverance that have always distinguished us. We are grateful to Grendi for their continued support and for deciding to join us in this new project with the same enthusiasm. Their presence as main partner is a strong signal of the goodness and confidence in a project that will make a significant contribution to the development of women’s football in Sardinia’.

Corrado Melis, President of Mediterranea Cagliari. ‘After 29 years of participation in five-a-side football championships, reaching the Serie A was a great satisfaction. Being the only Sardinian team in the top league, both men’s and women’s, made us reflect on the sense of responsibility of having to represent Sardinia in the best possible way. That is why our thoughts immediately went to Cagliari Calcio, an indisputable point of reference for the Sardinian people. This gave rise to the idea of proposing the inclusion of Serie A five-a-side football in Cagliari’s prestigious sporting history. My sincere thanks go to President Tommaso Giulini who enthusiastically accepted our proposal and Costanza Musso who, with the Grendi Group, will support our sports project and our social initiatives to promote gender equality. Wearing the Cagliari jersey will be a great honour for the girls of our first team and the Under-19 team. This responsibility spurs us on to strive to ensure that every member of our team is always an example of fairness and correctness for all the girls who want to try their hand at football and five-a-side football’.

Costanza Musso, CEO of Gruppo Grendi. ‘We enthusiastically welcomed the project to join Cagliari Calcio in supporting the only Sardinian women’s 5-a-side football team in Serie A. Grendi is a non-profit company that has made it one of its goals to participate in social projects of interdependence with the territories in which it operates and considers this project very much in line with its aims. Meanwhile, it works on gender inclusivity, in a sport that is still too masculine, and in addition to combining the name and logo of the Grendi company, affixed to match jerseys, with the logo of Cagliari Calcio, we are very interested in participating in the sports-social project called We Can Play Futsal – Il calcio a 5 a scuola per dare un calcio alla violenza di genere, held in Cagliari schools. We believe that the phenomenon of gender violence can only be overcome by working on the education of the new generations in schools because in this area it is the children who will educate the adults, if properly trained, and not vice versa’.

Alessandro Ariu, CEO of Eye Sport, concludes. ‘When President Giulini told me about the project that would lead to the birth of Cagliari Women’s 5-a-side Football, I immediately understood that, as a Sardinian company active in the supply of technical apparel for multiple sports, including futsal, and especially attentive to the different needs of female customers, we shared the values and objectives of this new project. We are therefore happy to also accompany the Cagliari Calcio a 5 women’s team in this new adventure in the top league’.

Cagliari Calcio invites all supporters to enthusiastically follow the adventures of Cagliari Calcio a 5 Women’s Soccer in this new and exciting season.

Forza Cagliari!
