Fabio Pisacane has been honored by the English newspaper “The Guardian” as the “Footballer of the Year.”

“A player who has done something truly remarkable, both overcoming adversity and helping others, proving to be a sporting example of exceptional integrity.” This is the motivation behind the award.

In an interview with the newspaper, Fabio spoke about the illness that struck him at the age of 14, Guillain-Barré syndrome. “It’s a condition that affects one person in a million and has to run its course. Once you hit rock bottom, you either climb back up, or it’s all over. In those tough moments, when I thought I couldn’t make it, I only thought about my family: I didn’t want to abandon my loved ones. Now I believe that the illness didn’t come to kill me but to make me stronger; otherwise, I wouldn’t be here talking about it.”

Fabio does not consider himself an example. “I am a simple, humble person. My humility leads me not to think that I should be considered an example.”

The Cagliari defender also shared his debut in Serie A against Atalanta and the post-match tears: “I am not someone who plans their emotions. I didn’t think I was in front of the cameras; I was exactly what everyone saw: a person who had overcome many obstacles to get to that day.”
