The entire Cagliari Calcio team learns with shock and deep sadness the news of the passing of Andrea Capone, who died at the age of just 43.
A native of Cagliari, he joined the club at a very young age, starting in the youth academy before fulfilling his dream of playing as a key player in the first team at the highest level. Born on January 8, 1981, a crystal-clear talent, he quickly made a name for himself with his undeniable qualities. In the Primavera team, he formed a dynamic partnership with David Suazo, marked by technical skill, speed, and goals—a duo that would later reunite in the first team.
His professional debut came at the age of 19 on the opening day of the 2000-2001 season in Serie B, during the match Cagliari-Crotone, which ended 4-0 in favor of Cagliari, on September 3, 2000. It would be a season with 12 appearances and one goal, scored on April 8, 2001, in a 3-1 victory against Cosenza.
He would wear the rossoblù shirt until 2006, with loan spells at Sora and Treviso in between. In the 2003-2004 season, the one marking the return to Serie A with Gianfranco Zola as captain, he contributed with 2 goals (against Pescara and Fiorentina) in 22 appearances. The 2005-2006 and 2006-2007 seasons would establish him in Serie A: on August 28, 2005, he made his debut in the top flight against Siena, and on September 21, he scored his first Serie A goal against Empoli. In total, he made 123 appearances, scored 12 goals, and provided 7 assists for Cagliari before continuing his career at Vicenza, Grosseto, and eventually Salerno.
The bond with his homeland will remain unbreakable, for a young man who was always known for his professionalism, dedication, and passion. These qualities will remain in the hearts of those who had the fortune to know him, meeting him both on and off the field. Cagliari Calcio expresses its deepest condolences and stands by the family during this time of great sorrow.
Rest in peace, Andrea
