Born in Varazdin, Croatia, in 1995, he is physically well-built and immediately attracted widespread attention as one of the most promising midfielders of his generation. Promoted to Varazdin's first team, he became the top scorer in the third division, scoring an impressive 17 goals at the age of 19.
RNK Split, a first division team, won the race to sign him. He did not disappoint, making 44 appearances in all competitions, scoring nine goals and providing seven assists. It was a triumphant year that opened the doors to Dinamo Zagreb, one of Croatia's biggest clubs and a regular in the Champions League. He played 50 times, scored 6 goals and provided 4 assists. Thanks in part to him, Dinamo won the Croatian league and cup.
In the summer of 2016, he moved to Italy to play for Napoli. He remained with the Azzurri until 2019, making 67 appearances, scoring 2 goals and providing as many assists, before moving to Cagliari. Bad luck got in the way just as he was proving his worth in the Rossoblù shirt: in December 2020, an injury to the cruciate ligament in his right knee ended his season prematurely. He returned motivated for the new season, but in a preseason friendly against Augsburg, he suffered another injury to the same knee. He managed to return in April and play the last eight games of the championship.
The following year, back in acceptable condition, he contributed to the Rossoblù's promotion to Serie A (21 appearances). In the summer of 2023, during a test match against Roma Under-19, his left knee unfortunately betrayed him: his season was compromised and he returned to Dinamo Zagreb in February 2024.
His second spell in the blue shirt ended with 31 appearances, one goal, one assist, and another double success on the national stage.
Marko has made 21 appearances for Croatia so far, being selected for Euro 2016, where he took to the field in the match against Spain.
Gifted with superb technique, his main strengths are dribbling, vision, and ability to get into space. He can be deployed in front of the defense as well as in midfield or as an attacking midfielder.
